Hi guys - four kids on and you'd think I ought to have breast feeding
mastered . . .

I have what feels like a plugged duct, but has now developed into a
blister on one side of my left breast - anyone got any ideas :
what it is?
Where to ask if no idea?
How to treat it?

Three days since it appeared, and it shows no sign of reducing with hot
baths and compresses.

Our Dr is worse than useless WRT breast feeding issues, the health
visitors are just as bad and as for family . . . best not go there ;)

Thanks in advance,

Hello Jen,
You could ask on misc.kids.breastfeeding
There are some very knowledgeable people there.
You could also phone you local LLL or ABM counsellor (numbers on the
web or in the Yellow Pages.
You might need some antibiotic cream to sooth and help it heal.
I think it's important to keep feeding from that side otherwise you
risk further problems.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

I have no useful information to offer, except to ask if you've been in
contact with your local La Leche league rep? They might be able to
suggest something.

cheers, Phil

Not as yet - I'd been hoping hot baths / compresses would do the trick,
but not the top has rubbed off the 'blister' and now it looks quite
dodgy ;( DH is worried in a 'not going to question you, but . . .' sort
of way. WILL TRY LL TOMORROW (SORRY FOR CAPS< PC JUST DECIDED TO REFUSE
TO TYPE IN LOWER CASE :(

THANKS

I'd contact one of the bf support organisations. All the national UK
groups are listed (with contact info) at
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BreastfeedingUKandIreland> - right on the
front page, even if you're not a member of the email list.

Hi,

Is it on the nipple? It could be a milk blister or bleb. Here's a link to
Kelly Mom for more info:
http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/nipplebleb.html

Otherwise, I'd recomend (as others have) a call to NCT or ABM etc.

Regards,

Suzanne

Thanks in advance,
I think you're meant to feed with the baby's chin pointing towards the
blocked duct. That means that they'll be feeding strongest from the blucked
duct.
Here, you can go back to the hospital and ask for help at the maternity wing
for such things for about 3 months after the birth. Try phoning them and
seeing?
Debbie.

Typically enough things are a bit better today!

I _think_ it's a blocked duct that had caused a lump, which then rubbed
on clothing and baby carrier causing a blister - with the 'top' off of
the blister there doesn't seem to be any infection immediately under the
skin, and now it is healing. The lump is also reducing in size.

Thank you all for your help - I kept drawing blanks when hunting for
info, as all the information about blisters referrers to them on the
nipple, rather than anywhere else.

Thanks for your help guys!
